Easter is the second most important Italian holiday after Christmas. Easter celebrations last for a long weekend in Italy, with the additional Italian observance of “Pasquetta” (Easter Monday).  A visit to any part of Italy during this period is an event not to be missed with processions, religious rituals, celebrations and of course wonderful food. However, Easter is also a very popular time for vacation, so we recommend that you get as many of the details sorted out well in advance for any trip you’re thinking of taking around Easter time.

The Easter weekend is a great opportunity to discover precious places in Italy, such as Milan, one of the most beautiful destinations of northern Italy, where you will find way less tourists than in other cities (such as Venice or Florence). If you are planning a long weekend getaway for Easter, Milan will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in stunning architecture, rich history and culture, amazing food but also nature. Milan is indeed full of parks (some of which with gorgeous pink flamingos inside) and secret courtyards where you will be able to enjoy uniquely italian traditions for Easter, such as a real Pasquetta’s Italian picnic.

Spring is one of the best time to visit Milan, strolling around the Art Nouveau architecture in the city streets or viewing Milan from above, by accessing the rooftops of Milan Duomo Cathedral, that offer a unique viewpoint and interact with the modern rising city, or climbing up to the top of the lofty Torre Branca.

Also, a visit to a museum is always a great way to spend a few hours of your Easter holiday, and if you are a culture lover Milan will not disappoint you, as it is full of great museums, art institutions and house-museums. Some of the not-to-be-missed are:

  • Gallerie d’Italia, a point of reference in the cultural life of the city, that hosts very important temporary exhibitions
  • Teatro alla Scala Museum, that will give you an intriguing behind-the-scenes insight into the history of this center of performing arts
  • Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, with its 24 rooms full of masterpieces, such as The Basket of Fruit by Caravaggio and The cartoon for the School of Athens by Raphael
  • Poldi Pezzoli House Museum, a palace of wonders created thanks to the passion of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, one of the most refined art collectors of the 19th century
  • Sforza Castle and Milan’s Civic Museum: 6 different museums, by visiting which you will discover centuries of art and culture, from dinosaurs to contemporary and modern artworks, from historical collections to archeological findings
  • Science and Technology Museum (especially recommended if you are travelling with kids), that includes machines, planes, cars, and ships, as well a huge variety of models built following Leonardo da Vinci’s original designs
  • Leonardo Da Vinci (Leonardo 3) Museum, a worldwide first with more than 200 interactive 3D reconstructions, accessible for all ages

Colomba easter Italy

For Christians, Easter represents the celebration of the end of Lent, so Easter meals traditionally are full of rich and tasty food that had to be given up for Lent. One of the most well-known and appreciated Easter foods all over the world is the Colomba, that was first commercialized by the Milanese baker and businessman Angelo Motta as an Easter version of the Christmas specialty Panettone. If you are to spend your Easter holiday in Milan, you cannot miss out on this delicious buttery and sweet bread: you will find it in many shops and bakery all over town. The “Uovo di Pasqua” (Easter chocolate egg) is also a homage to the tradition: we definitely recommend you go around Milanese streets to find the one that suits you the best (or to taste as many as you can!), as you will find all type of Easter chocolate eggs around town.

In between one Colomba and an Uovo di Pasqua, don’t forget to stop for a lunch, aperitivo or dinner in a real Milanese bar or restaurant. If you buy the Milan Travel Card, you will have access to an exclusive insider’s guide that will allow you to taste typical cuisine (but also many other Italian specialties).
